A Brief History of the Northside Trail Project
In 2002, Council Member Clair Muller's Office created a steering committee comprised of representatives from eight neighborhoods, Peachtree Battle, Collier Hills, Collier Hills North, Ardmore Park, Memorial Park, Spring Lake, Channing Valley, and Woodfield, to evaluate the feasibility of continuing the route of a multi-use trail that currently existed from Peachtree Battle Avenue to Sagamore Drive.
In 2004, the Trail Committee reached a recommendation of a proposed trail route from Sagamore Drive to Collier Road along the east side. This route was approved by NPU-C and the project was divided into two phases with the first one studying the area from Sagamore to Collier and the second exploring the possibility of continuing the path south to Tanyard and Ardmore Parks linking the trail to Peachtree Road and Piedmont Hospital.
Initial funding for the trail came from Transportation Enhancement (TE) funds which are funneled through the Georgia Department of Transportation (GA DOT). The City received $150,000 for implementation of the trail with $120,000 of the amount used for preliminary engineering. The remaining $30,000 was for construction.
To ensure the completion of the trail project, the Trail Committee recommended a partnership between the City and the Georgia Department of Transportation (GA DOT). Currently, The GA DOT has committed to installing sidewalks on the east side of Northside Drive from Sagamore to Overbrook Drive in conjunction with their Northside Drive Safety Improvement Project. By coordinating with GA DOT and PATH, the Northside Trail will be wider and more pedestrian friendly. In addition, a pedestrian footbridge will be installed enabling the trail to continue over the creek.
