The Mayor's Office of Communications is responsible for providing vital information to residents, business owners and the media about the City of Atlanta and the goals and initiatives of Mayor Kasim Reed. The Mayor's Office of Communications works closely with the Public Information Officers in other departments (e.g.: Police, Fire-Rescue, Planning and Community Development, Public Works, Watershed Management, etc.) to ensure the accurate and timely dissemination of news and information.
The Mayor's Office of Communications is often the first stop for reporters who are seeking information about the City of Atlanta. The Office manages relationships with dozens of local and national print, broadcast and online media outlets and organizes Mayoral press conferences and other announcements. The Office's daily functions include the creation and release of media advisories and press releases.
Digital Communications and Social Media
The Mayor's Office of Communications manages digital communications through the City of Atlanta website at www.atlantaga.gov and via social media channels such as Facebook, Twitter and YouTube.
The Mayor’s Office of Communications also includes the operations of City Channel 26. The channel broadcasts live Atlanta City Council and City Council Committee meetings and then replays them for the public. In a typical 24-hour rotation, a meeting will replay on average 2-3 times daily, based on the length of the meeting. In addition,Channel 26 creates original content, including four new shows:
- Neighborhood by Neighborhood
- Living Smarter with Aaron Watson,
- Keep It Intown with Kwanza Hall
- City Health Check
The Mayor's Office of Communications creates letters and ceremonial documents from the Mayor for residents who request them through our office. The office generated more than 2,500 ceremonial documents and Phoenix Awards (the highest honor the city can bestow) in 2010 and 2011.
