January 25 is National Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) Day, which highlights the benefits of this tax credit to those who are eligible. It is also the kick-off of the local Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program. More than 40 VITA sites located throughout metro-Atlanta with more than 500 IRS trained and certified volunteers will offer free tax preparation and help in determining EITC eligibility to individuals and families whose households earned $49,000 or less in 2012. Sites are open January 17 through April 15.
Millions of workers could overlook an important federal tax credit because they simply don’t know about it. As a result they could miss out on as much as $5,891 extra in their federal income tax refunds through the Earned Income Tax Credit, or EITC.
