Mayor Kasim Reed Appoints Tracee McDaniel to Atlanta Citizen Review Board
McDaniel is a leading advocate for transgender rights
ATLANTA – Mayor Kasim Reed announced today that he has appointed Tracee McDaniel, a leading advocate for transgender rights in the metropolitan Atlanta area, to the Atlanta Citizen Review Board. McDaniel is the founder and executive director of the Juxtaposed Center for Transformation, Incorporated, an advocacy, consulting and social services referral organization dedicated to empowering the diverse transgender and gender non-conforming community.
“I am pleased to appoint Tracee McDaniel to serve on the Atlanta Citizen Review Board,” said Mayor Reed. “As a life-long advocate for the transgender community, Ms. McDaniel will bring an important perspective and a lifetime of experience to this role. It is always essential to have minority voices in the room, and our LGBTQ community has a tremendous stake in positive police-community relations. I am confident Tracee McDaniel will serve Atlanta with excellence and dedication.”
McDaniel has served on the Atlanta Police Department’s LGBT Advisory Board and facilitated Transgender Cultural Competency training for APD Academy recruits. In 2014, she became a Vetted Trainer for the United States Department of Justice. McDaniel is a recognized community leader, having served on multiple boards. She has facilitated Atlanta’s observation of Stonewall weekends, including convening speakers' panels and marches. Currently, McDaniel serves on the Board of Directors for Trans Housing Atlanta Program (THAP) and on the programming board for The Center for Human Rights LGBT Institute.
Juxtaposed Center’s vision is to act as a collective body to provide basic, necessary and fundamental services to the transgender community. Juxtaposed Center is also an anchoring organization of Trans Housing Atlanta Program, which provides transitional and emergency housing to homeless and marginalized transgender and gender non-conforming people. Juxtaposed Center is the official organizer of (TDOR) Transgender Day of Remembrance, an annual vigil that memorializes transgender and gender non-conforming people who lost their lives to violence or hatred.
On March 30, 2015, McDaniel was invited to present at the White House’s Trans Women of Color Women History Month Briefing on Employment and Economic Equity and how those inequities affect transgender women of color. In 2007, McDaniel became the first transgender person invited to deliver a keynote address at the annual Martin Luther King, Jr. birthday celebration march.
