City of Atlanta Partners With Startup Atlanta to Host First Citywide “GovAThon”

City leaders and Atlanta’s technology community come together to collaborate on solutions that will improve city services

ATLANTA - The City of Atlanta, in partnership with Startup Atlanta, will host the first citywide GovAThon from 6:00 p.m. on Friday, February 22 to 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 23 in the Old Council Chambers of City Hall. Innovators from Atlanta’s technology community will volunteer their time for a 24-hour work session, with the goal of creating original applications. For the first time, city leaders will partner with coders, developers, designers and community stakeholders to develop ideas and solutions to improve city services.

“My administration is constantly working to improve the way government serves the people of our city,” said Mayor Kasim Reed. “I look forward to partnering with Atlanta's incredibly talented design and development community to bring new and innovative concepts to city government.”

City leaders will present projects to GovAThon volunteers, who will then build original applications based on the data and information provided. For example, the event could yield an app detailing the amenities available at public parks as well as an app outlining economic and tax incentives offered through Invest Atlanta. A panel of judges will evaluate the prototypes of apps and online tools and award prizes to the winning teams on Saturday.

“This will be a fantastic networking event, an opportunity for our brightest and most engaged citizens to meet each other and work together in an entrepreneurial setting,” said Dr. Eloisa Klementich, director of business development at Invest Atlanta. “We want to make Atlanta an even better place to live and do business.”
