Mayor Kasim Reed Thanks City Attorney Cathy Hampton for Exceptional Service to the City of Atlanta

ATLANTA – Mayor Kasim Reed announced today that City Attorney Cathy Hampton will leave her role as City Attorney after more than six years of public service. Hampton’s departure is effective May 19, 2017.

“Cathy Hampton has been a trusted advisor who has been by my side for the major successes of my administration, starting with pension reform, and most recently with the sale of Underground Atlanta,” said Mayor Reed. “Over the past six years, Cathy has been an essential member of my team, and under her leadership, the City Law Department has consistently delivered outstanding results for the people of Atlanta. I am grateful for her work, and wish her the best in the next chapter of her career.”

As the City of Atlanta’s Chief Legal Officer, Hampton was responsible for leading the Law Department, whose 85 members provide legal advice to Mayor Reed and the Atlanta City Council. The City Attorney oversees all civil legal matters for the City and its 8,000 employees, including the City’s water utility and Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, the world’s busiest and most efficient passenger airport.

“I thank Mayor Reed for the adventure of a lifetime,” said Cathy Hampton, City Attorney. “It has been a privilege and a blessing to serve the Reed Administration, the Atlanta City Council and the people of Atlanta. I especially thank the talented, dedicated professionals in the Law Department for their hard work and dedication.”

Hampton’s major accomplishments include spearheading the City’s historic pension reform; securing an unprecedented extension of the water consent decree; negotiating the 20-year airport lease agreement between Delta Air Lines, Inc. and the City; and reaching an amicable resolution to the long-standing dispute between the Atlanta Public Schools and the Atlanta BeltLine. Under Hampton’s leadership, the City’s landscape has been transformed by complex transactions which resulted in the development of Ponce City Market, the Porsche Cars North America headquarters, Mercedes-Benz Stadium, and the sales of Fort McPherson and most recently, Underground Atlanta.

In 2015, Hampton received the Outstanding General Counsel Award from the Atlanta Business Chronicle, and the Law Department was recognized by the Fulton County Daily Report as one of the In-House Legal Departments of the Year.

Mayor Reed will announce Hampton’s successor within the next seven days.
