The city of Atlanta has a goal of redeveloping the 488-acre former Army site to create jobs and promote economic development. Plans include the creation of a Science Park/Employment Center/Live, Work, Learn and Play Community containing 3.5 million square feet of labs and office, 1,747 units of residential development and a campus style collaborative environment to house Georgia’s core competencies in vaccines, infectious diseases, neurosciences and other targeted sciences. The Veterans Administration is renovating the existing clinic and adjacent buildings for the new McPherson VA Clinic scheduled to open in the spring of 2013.
The City of Atlanta is designing a linear park with an event space, paths, and bike trails that would wrap the property connecting MARTA station to MARTA station. Also plans are being made for a consolidated police and fire safety academy for the City of Atlanta.
The former Army base has a concentration of buildings suitable for re-purposing as well as space to increase density. The site is also accessible by two rapid-rail stations and four major interstate highways.
Information will be provided about the redevelopment of Fort McPherson from the City of Atlanta, the City of East Point, Invest Atlanta, Veterans Administration, Georgia Health Policy Center, businesses currently located at Fort McPherson, the commissary, credit unions and neighborhoods surrounding McPherson.
To enter Fort McPherson enter from Lee Street and follow signs to the Redevelopment Authority building.
