Everyday, we use energy in all aspects of our lives. Energy from electricity or natural gas keeps us warm in the winter and comfortable during summer. Energy from gasoline allows us to drop our kids off at school, get the groceries and commute to work. However energy use is a source of certain environmental and health problems such as air pollution and asthma. Rising energy prices also tax our wallets and pocketbooks. Energy conservation is often the fastest and least expensive way to save money and protect the environment.
Cost
Conservation is an energy solution that puts power in your hands. Every dollar you do not spend on energy can be spent on other priorities such as education, healthcare and your family. Just as importantly, money that is not spent on energy is more likely to stay in the community. A study by the Institute for Local Self Reliance found that up to 85 cents of every dollar spent on energy leaves the community.
Environment
Energy use contributes to air and water pollution. The most common pollutants are sulfur dioxide (acid rain), nitrous oxides (urban smog) and particulate matter (respiratory illness). Burning fossil fuels also emits carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas that contributes to global climate change. Nuclear power plants produce radioactive waste that lasts thousands of years and has to be transported long distances to be stored safely.
Health
Georgia’s electricity is produced mostly by burning coal that produces harmful particles and pollutants that trigger asthma attacks, often in children and the elderly.
