Mayor Shirley Franklin announces the Atlanta Advisory Commission to honor Mayors Ivan Allen, Jr. and Maynard Holbrook Jackson

Mayor Shirley Franklin, joined by Councilman C.T. Martin and other members of the Atlanta City Council today announced the members of the newly created Atlanta Advisory Commission to honor the dedication, commitment and faithfulness of Mayor Ivan Allen, Jr. and Mayor Maynard Holbrook Jackson, Jr.

The Advisory Commission, comprised of a maximum of 19 members, will propose how to honor the legacies of the two leaders who in very different ways significantly impacted the Atlanta of today.

In commenting on the appointments, Mayor Franklin said, “The membership reflects the rich diversity of our city. This commission is also charged with seeking public input and the approval of the Allen and Jackson families. I am confident that their proposals will be befitting of the lives of these two great leaders.”

The members of the Atlanta Advisory Commission are:

Mayoral Appointees
Jesse Hill, Jr. (Co-Chair)
A.  D. Correll, Jr. “Pete” (Co-Chair)
Sallie Adams Daniel
Marie Dodd
Reverend Gerald Durley
George Goodwin
Bill Ide
Ingrid Saunders Jones
Leo Mullin
Joyce Sheperd
Carl Ware
Lani Wong

Atlanta City Council Appointees

The Commission is an expansion of a concept and legislation introduced by Councilman C.T. Martin in the year 2000. His legislation called for the creation of a six-member panel to submit recommendations on honoring former Mayor Maynard Jackson. Councilman Martin says, “I believe it is fitting that we expand the size of the commission to identify the appropriate ways to honor these leaders.”

The Commission will provide the City of Atlanta, the City Council and the Mayor with its final recommendations within 60 days.
