Tenth Annual Mayor’s Cup Benefits Atlanta Youth Programs

Yesterday, business and community leaders joined Mayor Shirley Franklin at the St. Ives Country Club to golf for a worthy cause at the 10th Annual Mayor’s Cup Golf Tournament fundraiser.

Proceeds from the Mayor’s Cup Golf Tournament benefit the City of Atlanta’s summer program, Camp Best Friends, and First Tee of Atlanta. Camp Best Friends has locations at more than 30 City of Atlanta recreation centers and annually provides recreational programming to more than 3,800 Atlanta youth. For more information, visit their webpage

First Tee of Atlanta, located at John A. White Park, provides complimentary golf instruction for youth age 7-17. During the Tournament, members of First Tee of Atlanta participated in a Camper’s Cup challenge, where they demonstrated their golfing skills.

Georgia Tech head basketball coach Paul Hewitt was the keynote speaker at the Mayor’s Breakfast. Hewitt discussed the importance of sports in the life of a young person and the significant role that coaches play as mentors in a child’s development academically, socially and physically.

Additional funds were raised during the Tournament’s live auction. These funds will be used toward the Camp Best Friends endowment and the First Tee of Atlanta program.

Atlanta Police Foundation’s “Crime is Toast” Breakfast Celebrates Reduction in Crime

The Atlanta Police Department (APD) was honored for reducing crime to record lows during today’s 3rd Annual “Crime is Toast” breakfast, sponsored by the Atlanta Police Foundation (APF).

Mayor Shirley Franklin, APD Chief Richard Pennington and Dave Wilkinson, APF president and CEO, were among those present at the fundraiser and recognition ceremony. APD officers, staff and leadership were saluted for exceptional service, including the 2006 Medal of Honor Award and the 2005 Officer of the Year award.

Chief Pennington gave the “State of the Force” address. In the most recent FBI uniform crime report (UCR), Atlanta experienced a 9 percent decline in overall crime year-to-year, in contrast to the nation which experienced an increase. For additional Atlanta crime statistics, visit the APD website

To support the APD’s momentum in reducing and preventing crime, the City of Atlanta has embarked on an aggressive recruitment campaign for additional officers. The City plans to increase APD to a maximum strength of 2,000 officers by the end of the year. Currently, there are 1,786 officers on the force.

“I pay heartfelt tribute to all of those who serve so selflessly so that we have a safe city. Thanks to the APD, every day in Atlanta is a safe day,” said Mayor Franklin. “There is no question that we need more officers, a new public safety headquarters, increased homeland security planning and more pay for officers. As a community we must answer that call.”

The “Crime is Toast” breakfast raised approximately $80,000. APF will use these funds to support the APD with recruitment, continuing education, insurance policies, affordable homeownership programs, and more. Last year, APF embarked on a campaign to raise $3.7 million for APD support. As of December 2005, APF has raised $2.8 million.

For more information, visit APF website.

Mayor Franklin Introduces “The Atlanta Promise” to New Class of APS Seniors

Last week, Mayor Shirley Franklin visited several Atlanta Public Schools (APS) high schools where she introduced the new senior class to “The Atlanta Promise” program.

Mayor Franklin visited seniors at Grady High School and the New Schools of Carver.  By the end of December, Mayor Franklin will have met with seniors at all ten APS high schools.

"The Atlanta Promise” program has been a successful public-private partnership. Since its inception in 2005, the program has assisted thousands of APS seniors with their transition from high school to their next phase in life. Whether they are going to college or want to learn a technical trade, “The Atlanta Promise” has a program for all seniors.

“The only qualifications for participation in this program are to show up at the ‘Saturday with the Mayor’ sessions and be engaged with the AWDA staff throughout their senior year,” said Mayor Franklin.

In 2006, more than 1,100 APS graduating seniors participated in “The Atlanta Promise.” Of those, 570 received paid summer internships in fields pursuant to their career goals; 171 received lap top computers and over $950,000 in scholarships were awarded to cover students’ unmet college needs. Through “the Atlanta Promise” Youth Programs, over 150 youth between the ages of 14-21 earned technical certifications in the health, automotive and construction industries.
