(Atlanta, GA, August 7, 2003)---In efforts to build a supportive relationship and partnership with Atlanta customers and the City of Atlanta parks and recreation facilities, financial services company Western Union has selected Dunbar Recreation Center basketball court for a refurbishment project. Since 1975, The Dunbar Neighborhood and Recreation Center has served as the focal point for community activities for the residents of Mechanicsville, Pittsburgh and Adair Park.
"Western Union is more determined than ever to establish stronger relationships with our consumers and grassroots community groups", states Fedelina Madrid-Aragon, North America Manger of Community Development. She added, "It is our goal to make our presence known in communities through capital building projects, refurbishments and city donations to public parks and recreation facilities." Criteria for site refurbishment selection included demographics such as median household income, consumer transaction usage of Western Union services, as well as visibility and location. Total funding for the project is $20,000. In addition, as part of their ongoing commitment and community support of athletic programs, Western Union will contribute $5,000 annually towards athletic programs, uniforms and equipment.
Acting Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs Commissioner Dianne Harnell Cohen said, "We are thrilled with the partnership between Western Union and the Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs (DPRCA). We hope this will be just the start of such collaborations between Western Union, DPRCA and other corporate citizens. We thank Western Union for this wonderful new amenity at this facility, and for helping us achieve our mission of providing all visitors and citizens with the highest quality of parks, facilities, recreational programs and cultural experiences".
A dedication ceremony will take place on Friday, August 8 from 11:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. to celebrate the center's newly refurbished court and will feature a Basketball Exhibition and Clinic facilitated by celebrity players, along with refreshments, games and prizes. The event is free and open to the public.
