Mayor Franklin accepts Retirement of
Fire Chief Winston Minor

City of Atlanta Fire Chief Winston Minor submitted his retirement letter to Mayor Shirley Franklin, effective January 31, 2003. Mayor Franklin accepted his retirement with sincere regret and thanked Chief Minor for his 29 1/2 years of service with the City of Atlanta Fire Department.

The text of both letters follows:

November 15, 2002

The Honorable Shirley Franklin, Mayor
City of Atlanta
55 Trinity Avenue SW
Atlanta, GA 30318

Dear Mayor Franklin:

Since June 5, 1973, I have had the honor and pleasure of serving as a member of the Atlanta Fire Department. During my 291/2-year tenure, I have held the position of Firefighter, Fire Captain, Assistant Chief, and 7 years as Fire Chief.

I have now come to a point in my fire service career that leads me to announce my retirement effective as of January 31, 2003.

Mayor Franklin, it has been a pleasure to work with you and I appreciate the opportunity to have served in your administration.

I will always hold near and dear to my heart, the many challenges and experiences of my tenure as Fire Chief. Among those that come to mind are the Centennial Olympics, Black College Spring Break, Y2K, and the Terrorist Attacks of September 11, 2001.

Finally, I would also like to thank the citizens of Atlanta for their support and for allowing me the opportunity to work towards making our city a safer place to live and work.

Sincerely,

Winston L. Minor
Fire Chief
