Mayor Franklin today received a reimbursement check for slightly more than $62,000 on behalf of the City of Atlanta from the Georgia Emergency Management Agency (GEMA) for overtime labor in response to the September 21, 2002 flood.
On September 21, 2002 over 300 homes in two northwest neighborhoods and random areas of southwest Atlanta were significantly damaged by heavy rains and flooding. Mayor Franklin issued an administrative order creating an emergency disaster area, which was the first step necessary to secure potential assistance at the state level for the affected residents and areas.
Mayor Franklin stated, “On behalf of the City, I extend our thanks to Governor Sonny Perdue, the State of Georgia, and GEMA for this unprecedented action and their constant support as we continue to make the affected flood individuals and neighborhoods whole again.”
