City plants honored by Georgia Water & Pollution Control Association

April 18, 2003 – The Georgia Water & Pollution Control Association has honored the City of Atlanta’s three water reclamation facilities with Gold Awards for the second year in a row. The R.M. Clayton, Utoy and South River water reclamation centers earned the distinction for 100 percent compliance with the requirements of the federal National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System program. The awards were presented this week at the GWPCA’s Spring Conference and Expo in Macon. The three facilities also received Gold Awards from the Association of Metropolitan Sewerage Agencies in each of the past three years.

On the drinking water side, the Hemphill water treatment facility took home its first GWPCA Gold Award for achieving 100 percent compliance with the requirements of the Safe Drinking Water Act.

Atlanta Mayor Shirley Franklin joined Watershed Management Department Commissioner Jack Ravan in praising the GWPCA’s recognition of the City’s efforts.  “The Mayor and I, along with the dedicated staff of the Watershed Management Department, have made a commitment to the people of Atlanta to provide them with the highest quality water possible,” Ravan said. “These awards show that the hard work of our employees has paid off.”
