Mayor Shirley Franklin and Councilmembers Celebrate the Completion of the Hemphill Discharge Piping Project

Mayor Shirley Franklin, the Atlanta City Council and the City of Atlanta Department of Watershed Management will commemorate the completion of the Hemphill Discharge Piping Project with a ribbon cutting ceremony on Thursday, December 12, 2002, at 8:45 a.m. The ceremony will be held at 1174 Northside Drive, NW.

Mayor Shirley Franklin and Council Members Ivory Lee Young, Jr. and Clair Muller will all be part of the celebration to be officiated by Jack Ravan, Commissioner of the Department of Watershed Management.

The Hemphill Discharge Piping Project is part of the City’s water main replacement program, replacing critical and aging mains connected to the Hemphill Pump Station. The project includes the installation of approximately 3 miles of new water transmission mains and the replacement of old mains. Also included is the installation of a new 7,000-cubic foot surge control system at the Hemphill Water Treatment Plant. The new mains are necessary to handle the increase in pressure from an electric pump station that is scheduled to be on-line in 2003. A new surge tank will also reduce the risk of water main breaks in the distribution system.

Atlanta’s increasing population has created a higher demand on the water distribution system than some of the aging water lines are capable of handling. This project is an important step in providing
efficient and reliable water service.
