News conference with Mayor Shirley Franklin and Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport General Manager Ben DeCosta

Thursday, September 15, 2005  • 12:00 noon at City Hall 2nd Floor, 55 Trinity Ave., S.W.

STATEMENT BY

Mayor Shirley Franklin
City of Atlanta

Chapter 11 Bankruptcy Filing of Delta Air Lines, Inc.

Delta, like several of its competitors, has found it necessary to file for Chapter 11 protection in an attempt to reorganize its finances and business affairs so that it can survive as a viable player in the airline industry.  We are confident that Delta’s bankruptcy filing will not impact the high quality of service that Delta provides at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport

We understand the concern that the Delta bankruptcy filing may affect airport operations and the progress of airport improvements. In particular, we are encouraged by Delta’s recent announcement that it intends to expand service at the airport by adding more non-stop flights to regional business destinations, Hawaii, and international locations this fall and winter.  Hartsfield-Jackson’s efficiency and low cost structure make it an attractive place for airlines to operate,

We appreciate that the decision by Delta to file bankruptcy was difficult and complex, as is the road ahead of them.  We join all of Atlanta’s citizens in wishing them success now and for many years to come.
