FINAL FOUR-WEEKEND TRAFFIC ADVISORY

From Thursday, March 29 – Monday, April 02, 2007, the City of Atlanta will host the NCAA Basketball Championships at the Georgia Dome.  In addition, a number of other sizeable events will draw tens of thousands to the downtown area.  A listing of events is attached.  Access to the Atlanta Police Department Special Events Calendar is available online at http://atlantapd.org/events.

These events will cause increased vehicular and pedestrian traffic in the downtown area.  Consequently, additional police personnel will be deployed for increased security and traffic control.  The use of MARTA is strongly recommended.

Traffic delays should be anticipated in the downtown area, especially around the Georgia Dome, Philips Arena, the Georgia Aquarium, and the Georgia World Congress Center.  Travelers are encouraged to thoroughly research their route and plan an earlier departure time to accommodate the increased traffic volume.  Recommended interstate exits for the events are as follows:

  • From I 75/85 North -International Blvd or Central Avenue
  • From I-75/85 South - Northside Drive (GA Dome), Williams Street, or Martin Luther King
  • From I-20 East - Windsor/Spring Street
  • From I-20 West - Capitol Avenue or Windsor Street

Please emphasize: We are asking those going to the Georgia Dome events from the North to exit I-75 at Northside Drive and follow it South to the venue.

The Atlanta Police Department is coordinating efforts with event venue management and security teams, the Georgia World Congress Center Police, the State Department of Transportation (DOT), MARTA Police and the Atlanta Office of Transportation.  Interstate variable message boards and portable variable message boards will highlight routes.  Motorists are reminded to call “*DOT” concerning disabled vehicles on the interstate.

For more information, Atlanta Police Commanders will provide on camera interviews concerning traffic and safety issues surrounding events.

WHERE:    Inside of Centennial Olympic Park (by the flags)

WHEN:       Thursday March 29, 2007, At 12 Noon

Due to the commanders demanding schedule this will be the ONLY opportunity for on camera interviews, unless a public safety emergency arises.  Please plan to have a representative to be in attendance.
