Today, Lynnette W. Young the Chief Operating Officer for the City of Atlanta since 2002 announced she will leave to lead the City’s future Sustainability Initiative.
“Lynnette’s leadership has been invaluable as we have moved from the challenges we faced in the early years of my administration to the day-to-day work of reforming city government. Her vision and tenacious management has been the difference in why Atlanta has turned the corner and is on the way to best in class,” said Mayor Franklin.
Young’s accomplishments as Chief Operating Officer include the Mayor’s first-term recruitment of many of the cabinet level officials still serving now. She has played a pivotal role in every major city initiative in the Franklin administration, including the advancement of technology upgrades to city services like ATL STAT which is a web-based dashboard that charts department goals and milestones and online permitting, as well as a leader on the Brand Atlanta campaign, and the development of significant partnerships with the business and civic community to further advance government reform goals.
She will remain as COO through August when she will lead the Sustainability Initiative. The current policy trend among many American cities is the exploration and establishment of sustainability and environmental programs that prepare cities for greener futures. Such a critically important initiative will be best served by Young’s leadership that has been demonstrated over the past five years as Atlanta’s day-to-day operations chief.
On Monday Young said, "I am honored by the Mayor's confidence in me and excited by this new challenge that will change the quality of life for generations of Atlantans. It has been my privilege to serve Mayor Franklin and the residents of Atlanta for five incredible years as COO and I look forward to continuing that service by leading this major public policy initiative."
Mayor Franklin is expected to appoint Greg Giornelli to serve as Chief Operating Officer after Atlanta City Council confirmation in mid July.
Giornelli joined the Franklin administration in 2002 as a Senior Policy Advisor and most recently as President of the Atlanta Development Authority (ADA).
