Mayor Shirley Franklin's Statement on Investigation of Frances Thompson Incident

The examination of police conduct to consider more strident federal regulations for police is a national issue. As someone who personally holds US House Judiciary Committee Chairman and Michigan Congressman John Conyers in high regard, I welcome a public discussion at the Congressional level that reviews police conduct in Atlanta and seeks solutions.

As mayor I seek to have a fair, responsive and competent public safety force to prevent crime and to enforce the law. For no community will succeed, grow and thrive unless there is a trusting relationship between the public safety officers, the elected leadership and the public. I am committed to building on the successes of APD and other city agencies, learning from our mistakes and taking corrective action as needed.
