City of Atlanta PROVIDING AFFORDABLE HOUSING AND Job PLACEMENT ASSISTANCE

At the request of Mayor Shirley Franklin, the City of Atlanta Department of Housing, the Atlanta Housing Authority, and the Atlanta Development Authority have identified approximately 800 immediately available affordable housing units for city residents and Hurricane Katrina individuals and families.  The City of Atlanta has opened its arms to displaced neighbors from the Gulf Coast, and the City is eager to help them transition out of emergency shelters and into more permanent housing.

The list of available units will be distributed at the Atlanta Workforce Development Agency (AWDA) Job Fairs, which are held every Tuesday from 9-12 at the AWDA offices at 818 Pollard, near Turner Field.  More than 800 individuals attended last week’s Job Fair at the Atlanta Workforce Development Agency, and tomorrow’s attendance is expected to be even higher.

The City of Atlanta will continue to work with its non-profit partners, including churches, synagogues, and mosques to provide needed financial, material, and emotional support to displaced individuals and families.  Providing affordable housing is essential in the efforts to minimize the disruption in the lives of so many.

The City of Atlanta recognizes the needs of those displaced by Hurricane Katrina and will continue to assist them as long as the need exists. Special recognition should be given to the many community volunteers and City departments, such as the Atlanta Police Department, the Department of Public Works and the Department of Parks & Recreation for their tireless and continued support to those devastated by Hurricane Katrina.
