Art in Motion Presented at City Gallery East and on MARTA buses

The City of Atlanta Office of Cultural Affairs partners with MARTA to simultaneously put artwork on city buses and in City Gallery East

The Office of Cultural Affairs (OCA) announces Art in Motion, an exhibit jointly sponsored by MARTA that supports five artists and their respective crafts.  The exhibit will run in City Gallery East from Friday, October 19 – Friday, November 23 and the artwork will appear on the sides of 25 MARTA buses during the same time period.  The artists, Sheila Pree-Bright, Kathryn Kolb, Mario Petrirena, Michael Reese and Larry Walker Each were allowed five images that were installed on the side panels of MARTA buses and in City Gallery East.

Sheila Pree-Bright is a rising star among Atlanta photographers.  She received her MFA in Photography from Georgia State University and is currently working on a project called Young Americans, involving the American flag and 16-27 year olds.

Kathryn Kolb is a free lance photographer.  She received her BA in History from Emory University.  Her work focuses on objects of nature that often blur the line between photography and painting.

Mario Petrirena’s work reflects his dual heritage (Cuban and American); his work is often autobiographical, exploring complexities, duality, contradictions and humor.  He received his MFA from the Rochester Institute of Technology School for American Craftsman and a BA from the University of Florida.

Michael Reese is a photographer and multi-media artist.  He received is BFA in photography from the Atlanta College of Art and focuses is work on spiritual and humanistic concerns.

The great idea for this dual gallery/public art exhibit came from a submission from Mario Petrirena.  To him we are truly grateful.  The artists involved in this project are all equally talented and each one communicates uniquely with their craft.  We are especially proud of our collaboration with MARTA to bring this exhibit to the public using their wheels to put it “in motion.”- Camille Russell Love, Director, Office of Cultural Affairs

With 8,000 square-feet of exhibition space, City Gallery East, located on the first floor of City Hall East, is one of the largest continuous exhibition spaces in the city. Dedicated to presenting contemporary fine art, the gallery's primary focus is on the art of Atlanta-based artists. City Gallery East sponsors community-based exhibitions that provide an opportunity for greater exposure of community initiatives.
