Barnes named Deputy Commissioner for Engineering


Commissioner Robert Hunter today named George Barnes Deputy Commissioner for Engineering Services with the City’s Department of Watershed Management. In this capacity, Deputy Commissioner Barnes will be responsible for the design and construction process of the City’s Capital Improvement Program and infrastructure projects related to the consent decree program. Barnes has been serving as the Deputy Commissioner for Stormwater in the Department of Watershed Management since December 2002.

A professional engineer with more than 40 years of environmental engineering and management experience, Barnes previously served the City as Director of the Bureau of Pollution Control. He received a Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering from the Virginia Military Institute and a Masters Degree in Environmental Engineering from Georgia Tech.

"George Barnes has been responsible for the substantial cost savings the City has realized through the value engineering process," Hunter said. " I am confident that his strong engineering skills and emphasis on cost containment and value will continue to be of great benefit to the City and our ratepayers." As Deputy Commissioner, Barnes will manage 199 employees and a budget of more than $23 million.

"I look forward to the new challenges presented by this position and to helping Mayor Franklin and the Department keep the promises of Clean Water Atlanta," Barnes said.

Barnes and his wife, Della, live in Morningside. They have two daughters and three grandchildren.
