CITY OF ATLANTA ENHANCES THE BUILDING PERMITTING PROCESS

As a part of a citywide initiative to create a more effective and efficient government, the City of Atlanta’s Department of Planning and Community Development has implemented major changes to improve the permitting process for Atlanta contractors and residents.  On February 6, 2006, the Bureau of Buildings launched two new on-line services.  Now, contractors and residents can view their building permit status and find the cost of their permit online.

Applicants can easily view the status of a permit on the City of Atlanta’s website (http://www.atlantaga.gov/government/planning/burofbuildings.aspx) Bureau of Buildings Director, Kiumars Siah said, “These new enhancements allow permit applicants to be served around the clock.  Contractors and Atlanta residents only need to enter a permit number or street address to check the status of a permit any time and any day of the week.”

In addition to the on-line permit status enhancements, the Bureau of Buildings is implementing a new consolidated payment process.  This process eliminates the need for multiple payments for building permits.  Previously, contractors and Atlanta residents seeking a permit were required to make as many as four separate payments to the City throughout the process.  Under the new process, permit customers are only required to make one permit payment at the end of the permit approval process.

“We are moving forward using technology to further Atlanta’s progress,” said Mayor Shirley Franklin. "These improvements to our permitting process will make it easier for our customers to do business with the City.”
