Today, Mayor Shirley Franklin signed an Emergency Resolution, declaring an Emergency in the City of Atlanta as a result of Hurricane Ivan, and requested disaster assistance from Governor of Georgia.
The text of the resolution appears below:
Emergency Resolution
WHEREAS, commencing on September 16, 2004, the City of Atlanta, Georgia sustained severe losses and threats to life and property as a result of Hurricane Ivan;
And,
WHEREAS, the following conditions exist as a result of this natural disaster:
- Major and minor damage sustained by homes, businesses, and government buildings from high winds and rain
- Over 390 fallen trees on public right of ways, and city streets and other areas of the City
- Major and minor flooding to homes, businesses and government buildings
- Extensive emergency response to protect life and property
- Extensive debris removal
- The opening of an emergency shelter for residents affected by the hurricane
- The opening of the Atlanta-Fulton County Emergency Operations Center
And,
WHEREAS, the severity and magnitude of the emergency is beyond the timely and effective capability of local resources;
THEREFORE, be it resolved that the City of Atlanta does declare an Emergency in accordance with the City of Atlanta Code Section 2-181, and requests that the Governor of Georgia provide disaster assistance.
