City Of Atlanta Department Of Public Works Dismisses Employee Involved In Verbal Altercation Against a Private Citizen

On November 2, 2009, the Department of Public Works (DPW) received a complaint from a private citizen regarding a verbal altercation, which involved a DPW employee.   An internal investigation was conducted and it was determined that there was substantial evidence to warrant disciplinary action against the employee involved in the altercation.  The employee, Dexter Thorton, was served today with a notice of proposed adverse action with a recommendation for dismissal. Mr. Thorton, who has been employed with DPW for a period of four years, will have five days to respond.  A notice of final adverse action will be served to the employee.

Civil Service procedures allow for an appeals process which involves a hearing.  Should the action be appealed, a hearing date will be held with the Civil Service Board.  The Civil Service Board will decide whether or not to uphold the dismissal.

The Department of Public Works strives to provide exemplary service to our customers.  We have a highly skilled and motivated workforce of nearly 700 employees. We do not tolerate inappropriate behavior on the part of any of our employees.
