Boring begins on
Flint River Force Main Project

Boring began this week on the Flint River Force Main Project in Southeast Atlanta with construction scheduled to start next week. The Flint River transmission main pumps wastewater from the Flint River basin, which includes the cities of Atlanta, College Park and East Point, to the South River Water Reclamation Center on Jonesboro Road. The project is part of the $3.2 billion Clean Water Atlanta program to overhaul the City’s water and wastewater systems and ensure clean, reliable water for residents and downstream communities.

“This project will reduce sewer backups, leaks and sanitary sewer overflows in Southeast Atlanta,” Commissioner Rob Hunter said. “And it will enhance sewer capacity in the area to allow for additional development in the future.”

The project is being completed in three phases, 1A, 1B and 1C.  Phase 1B, which begins this week, involves the replacement of a 3,200-foot section of pipe along School Drive and Jonesboro Road from the intersection of Cleveland Avenue and Jonesboro Road south along Jonesboro Road. Phase 1C, which is currently in design, will involve replacement of deteriorated sections of gravity and pressurized pipes. Phase 1A, which involved the replacement of 1,405 feet of pipe, was completed in December 2003.

The project may create minor disruptions, such as partial road closures and truck traffic, in the affected community. For more information, visit www.cleanwateratlanta.com or call 404.529.9211.
