In an effort to help students who have been evacuated from their homes, Georgia State University and Atlanta Public Schools (APS) will accept students that have been displaced by Hurricane Katrina.
Georgia State University is accepting students who can show proof of enrollment at an accredited university or college in the New Orleans area as transient students for the fall semester. Georgia State University is in the second week of classes so interested students interested are urged to contact the university as soon as possible.
APS is accepting students who may reside in a shelter or with others that are considered homeless under the Mckinney-Vento Act (Federal Legislation). These students will be enrolled in the APS zone that is determined by the address of the shelter or temporary residence. To determine what zone in which a student resides, please go to http://www.atlanta.k12.ga.us/ and click on “Our Schools” and “School District Map/Zones” or call 404.802.3500.
Elementary and middle school displaced students will qualify for free lunches. Transportation will be provide if the student is zoned to an APS school and resides over a mile from the school. For more information, contact APS at 404.802.3500
College students can begin the registration process by going to the Georgia State University Admissions Office, Sparks Hall room 200. Sparks Hall is located at the corner of Gilmer and Cortland streets in downtown Atlanta.
