City of Atlanta Seeking Community Support for Hurricane Katrina Families

The City of Atlanta, members of the faith-based community, state and local officials and other human service providers have been actively supporting those devastated in the Gulf Area since last Tuesday.  The City of Atlanta’s Adamsville Recreation Center on Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive has served as a center for connecting those impacted by Hurricane Katrina with service providers from the surrounding area.  The recreation center is providing multiple services including, job placement, student services, food stamps, Medicare, Medicaid, general store and internet connections.  Volunteer Grady Hospital and Emory University physicians have also been on site to provide medical assistance.

Just this weekend alone, volunteers at Atlanta Workforce Development Agency (AWDA) have sorted over 8,000 pounds of food, sorted over 3,000 pounds of clothes and served over 500 families through the general store.  Atlanta Workforce Development Agency continues to offer job training, computer access, resume assistance, internet and local phone service and held a job fair today where hundreds applied for jobs with over 15 companies.
