City of Atlanta’S ADAMSVILLE RECREATION CENTER WILL CONTINUE TO OFFER SERVICES FOR Hurricane Katrina EVACUEES

While the Red Cross has moved its operation to College Park, the City of Atlanta will continue to offer services at the Adamsville Recreation Center in southwest Atlanta. The city services offered at Adamsville will not be offered at the Red Cross College Park location however, the Red Cross has agreed to provide transportation for evacuees from Adamsville to the mega service center in College Park.

Since August 30, at the request of the Red Cross, the City of Atlanta was pleased to assist by serving as the first shelter site in Atlanta and then as the primary service center. Even after nearly a week, when the Red Cross opened the Georgia Tech Coliseum to house evacuees, thousands continued to come to Adamsville, and the center remained open to meet the growing need.

The services that have been offered at Adamsville Recreation Center, since the emergency center opened will remain open for as long as the need exists. The Adamsville Center will continue to provide the following services to evacuees:

§         West End Medical Center has seen nearly 100 patients a day this week and will continue to refer patients to Grady Health Center, Oakhurst and Southside to address any urgent medical needs. Many of the evacuees are being treated for hypertension, diabetes and other related illness as well as dental care.

§         Fulton County Department of Mental Health continues to provide mental health evaluations

§         Atlanta Police Chaplains are providing necessary counseling for many evacuees

§         Atlanta Public Schools (APS) will continue to be on site to enroll students. APS has distributed over 700 book bags to students

§         Fulton County Department of Children and Family Services has trained social workers to meet the needs of children and families impacted by the disaster

§          Cyber Center internet services remain available to check bank accounts, to search for jobs and relatives and for local phone service

§         Atlanta Housing Authority continues to assist in the efforts to locate temporary housing for evacuee residents

§         The Adamsville General Store offers free toiletries, baby care products, formula, and other personal care items for children and adults

§         Food Donations are still be accepted. This effort is coordinated through the Atlanta Food Bank and several other partners

Conveniently located near I-20 and I-285 in southwest Atlanta, Adamsville is also located on the MARTA line for evacuee residents who are using public transportation.

The City of Atlanta recognizes the needs of our displaced neighbors and will continue to fill the service gap for as long as the need exist. Special recognition should be given to the many community volunteers and City departments, such as the Atlanta Police Department, the Department of Public Works and the Department of Parks & Recreation for their tireless and continued support to those devastated by Hurricane Katrina.
