On Wednesday, January 18, the City of Atlanta will replace 21 parking meters in front of the Municipal Court Building, located at 150 Garnett Street, with seven new “multi-use” ones. The City will offer public demonstrations of the new meters to motorists at 10:00 a.m.
Each “multi-use” meter will accept cash, credit and debit cards and collect fees for seven different spaces, making parking more efficient and effective. The highly-secure, all-steel machines are equipped with an alarm mechanism that sends a warning to police at the hint of vandalism, which may decrease meter theft.
The new meters will not replace all the old ones, and locations for new ones will be based on parking demand and the need for increased meter security. After a 180-day trial period, the city will hold competitive bids to acquire meters in other locations.
“These meters are a win-win prospect,” said City Public Works Commissioner David Scott. “They will make the collection of parking fees more convenient for consumers and more secure for the system. They will also allow us to reduce the amount of hardware on the curb, which will improve the aesthetics of our streets.”
