The City of Atlanta is proud to announce Phoenix II Park has been named the City of Atlanta 2006 Park of the Year.
Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs in collaboration with Park Pride initiated the Park of the Year program two years ago. Each month, from April through October, each Park District nominates one of their parks for the Park of the Month award. An outside panel from Park Pride visits and evaluates each nominated park and judges them against set criteria. Among the criteria are the condition of the lawn and planting beds, cleanliness, hazards and graffiti. The park that best meets these criteria is named Park of the Month. Judges continue to visit the parks throughout the course of the year, and the Park that best meets the criteria over the course of the year is named Park of the Year.
“This is a wonderful program for all of us in Parks”, said Ken Gillett, Acting Director of Parks. “All the crews are motivated by the competition, the winners take great pride in their accomplishments, and the community gets the park they deserve.” Eddie Clark, Operations Manager said “The best part of this program is that it is on-going. We have to try every day to make each park a park of the month, and if we’re really good, a park of the year.”
The Office of Parks staff is laser-focused on the Office of Parks mission to improve, preserve, protect and maintain the City’s parks and public green spaces – ensuring a safe and enjoyable enhancement to the quality of life for all residents and visitors to the City of Atlanta.
“City parks play an essential role in the quality of life of residents. Phoenix II Park is a stellar example of improved parks maintenance our residents and visitors can enjoy. We are grateful for the efforts put forth by a staff that is trained and dedicated to maintaining and preserving our public greenspaces, and we thank Park Pride for being our partner in this,” said Dianne Harnell Cohen, Commissioner – Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs. “Because of recognition programs like Park of the Year, we will continue to raise the bar on improving and maintaining all of our parks and greenspaces.”
