City of Atlanta Forms Community Advisory Board for Input on Solid Waste Facility Planning

To ensure continued community input in the City of Atlanta’s planning process for solid waste management, Mayor Shirley Franklin has established the Solid Waste Advisory Committee (SWAC). The committee will recommend criteria for assessing and comparing potential solid waste facility sites as part of the Facility Master Plan (FMP) process.

The FMP is a component of the City of Atlanta’s, state-mandated Comprehensive Solid Waste Management Plan, which outlines strategies and policies for operations, disposal, and waste reduction for the City for the next ten years. The FMP, expected to be completed in early 2007, will guide the site selection and development of service centers to accommodate Atlanta’s future municipal waste needs.

Members of the SWAC are Ralph Cleveland, Atlanta Gas Light; Jeremy Crampton, Georgia State University; Dr. Vivien Davenport, International Preparatory Institute; Felecia Davis, Environmental Justice Center, Clark Atlanta University; Michelle Dawkins, Clark Atlanta University; Leon Eplan, Eplan Consulting; Virgilio Perez-Pascoe, Community Media Services  ; Joyie Gibson, Bank of America; Tim Goodson, Atlanta Gas Light; David Gustashaw, Interface Inc.;  Richard Hood, Martin Luther King Merchant Association; Angie Laurie, Central Atlanta Progress; Calvin Maddox, Community; Robert Mowrey, Alston & Bird; Majiyd Nurse, high school student in Atlanta’s Next Step Program; Francello Phillips-Calhoun, Wesley Community Centers; Rev. Robert Rice, Jr., Brown Avenue Missionary Baptist Church; Sally Silver, Buckhead Business Association; Barry M. Slay,  Northwest Business Association; Mark Taylor, The HT Group; Jenny Voigt DeVaughn, Cambridge Professional Group; Rev. Eric Thomas, St. Peter Missionary Baptist Church; Saundi Wilson, Atlanta Planning Advisory Board and Dr. Walter Young, Cascade Business Association.

In addition to the SWAC the City will solicit broad community input via public meetings in each council district. “Community input is critical to establishing facilities that will meet the growing demand for the disposal of our waste,” said David Scott, Commissioner of Public Works. “It is imperative that the needs, values and priorities of the neighborhoods we serve are factored into the design, location and development of solid waste facilities.”
