Mayor Shirley Franklin will provide the keynote address at the 11:30 a.m. luncheon honoring the U.S. finalists for the Stockholm Junior Water Prize, Friday, June 23, at the downtown Sheraton Hotel. The most prestigious international high school competition related to water science research, the Stockholm Junior Water Prize is open to projects aimed at improving the quality of life through improvement of water quality, water resources management, water protection or water and wastewater treatment. The U.S. winner will advance to the international competition in Stockholm, Sweden, during World Water Week (August 20-26).
Oconee County High School student Heather Mispagel won the U.S. competition in 2003 for a project involving the study of antibiotic-resistant bacteria in sewage treatment ponds. Mispagel is now a microbiology major at the University of Georgia.
The Stockholm Junior Water Prize competition is sponsored by the Water Environment Federation and the Georgia Association of Water Professionals with support from ITT Industries and Coca-Cola.
The Department of Watershed Management is co-hosting, with Fulton County, a hospitality suite at the downtown Sheraton Hotel today, Thursday, June 22, for students and teachers in town for the Stockholm Junior Water Prize competition.
