Today is the kick-off of the 2007 Mayor’s Youth Summer Employment and Training Program. The Mayor’s Youth Summer Employment and Training Program, now in its 3rd year, continues to provide Atlanta Public Schools (APS) high school seniors and the senior children of Atlanta City employees, with paid summer employment and training.
As of today, over 900 Mayor’s Youth program participants have begun training programs and competitive summer internships at businesses all over the City of Atlanta. Over 100 companies have stepped forward to offer paid summer internships including: The Georgia Aquarium, Airtran, Sodexho, Zoo Atlanta, Georgia Power, Turner Broadcasting, Kilpatrick & Stockton, Hyatt Regency, Metro Chamber of Commerce, IBM, and TDC Systems Inc.
“The Mayor’s Youth Summer Employment and Training Program is made possible by our corporate partners who contribute so generously to Atlanta’s youth by offering summer internships that provide them with an opportunity to grow and gain experience in an array of industries,” said Mayor Franklin. “As a result, students are better prepared for the next phase in their lives, whether it is the workforce, community college, or a four year college or university.”
Internships are still needed. If you are interested in providing a valuable summer experience for a high school senior, please call Pat Koch at 404.880-7235 or email her at PKoch@atlantaga.gov.
The Mayor’s Youth Summer Employment and Training Program is part of the Mayor’s Youth Program (formerly know as “Next Step … The Atlanta Promise”) that Mayor Shirley Franklin launched in 2005 as a means to offer Atlanta’s youth the opportunity to develop and implement practical and individualized plans for their future. The program, managed by the Atlanta Workforce Development Agency, has assisted over 1000 students to achieve their goals of attending college, gaining valuable training, and/or going straight into the workforce.
The Mayor’s Youth program also offers participants a variety of training courses including: Writing 101 for students attending colleges or universities in the fall, Oracle Training, an eight week advanced level computer class for individual’s pursuing studies in Information Technology; a HealthCare program through Atlanta Technical College where students interested in pursuing a career in nursing, patient care technician and pharmacy technician can attain their certification, ArtsCool for individuals with talent in the performing arts, visual arts, and/or media production fields; and Lifeguard, Police Cadet, and Fire Cadet training programs for those individuals pursuing a career in those specific areas.
Funding for the Mayor’s Youth program is made possible through corporate and community contributions.
