MAYOR SHIRLEY FRANKLIN JOINS COUNCILMEMBERS AND COMMUNITY LEADERS TO CELEBRATE THE COMPLETION OF ONE OF THE CITY’S LARGEST SEWER PROJECTS

The Orme Street Trunk Sewer (Phase III) is an important part of the Atlanta Wastewater Systems Improvement Program”

Mayor Shirley Franklin today joined Councilmembers Debi Starnes (District 2) and Howard Shook (District 7), other members of the Atlanta City Council, and community leaders to celebrate the completion of another phase of the city’s $1.1 billion sanitary services Capitol Improvement Projects.

“We are very excited to announce the completion of Phase III of the Orme Street Trunk Sewer Project,” Mayor Franklin said. “This is one of many projects necessary to improve our aging infrastructure, each step takes us closer to achieving our goal of creating a first class sewer system and protecting the health and environment of our citizens.  This truly calls for a celebration.”

The Orme Street Trunk Sewer (Phase III) project included the construction of a sewer relief tunnel beginning at 4th Street, then south on Brittain Drive to Bobby Dodd Way and south on Centennial Olympic Boulevard (formerly Techwood Drive) to Merritts Avenue. The relief tunnel is designed to decrease sewer overflows through the utilization of new and larger sewer lines.

To commemorate the completion of the project, Mayor Franklin joined other officials to present a bronze plaque donated by project contractor Bradshaw/MC Joint Venture. The plaque will be installed in the sidewalk on Brittain Drive. University Village. The Catholic Center and two sororities from Georgia Tech were presented Community Service Awards for their patience and cooperation during construction, which caused considerable disruption near the campuses of Georgia Tech and Georgia State University Village.

The Orme Street Trunk is one of ten sanitary sewer Capitol Improvement Projects funded from the $1.1 billion water and sewer bond sale held in March 1999.
