Mayor Kasim Reed Celebrates the Launch of TravelSafely App

The City of Atlanta today announced the launch of the TravelSafely app. The TravelSafely app is the newest tool that will be used along the North Avenue Smart Corridor, the 2.3 mile stretch of North Avenue from Ponce City Market to Georgia Tech. The intuitive new app, powered by Applied Information, uses smart technology to connect users to city infrastructure, school beacon systems, motorists, cyclists, pedestrians, traffic light changes, and emergency vehicles. The app provides audible warnings to alert users of potentially dangerous traffic situations such as runners and cyclists, and when users are speeding toward a curve or school zone, all while keeping their eyes on the road.

“Today’s launch marks another important step in Atlanta’s Smart City future,” said Mayor Reed. “The TravelSafely app’s innovative technology will improve flow of traffic and make our North Avenue Smart Corridor even safer for our motorists, cyclists and pedestrians. I’m pleased that Atlanta continues to be on the leading edge of technology. I would like to thank Faye DiMassimo, our partners at GDOT, Applied Information and everyone involved in this visionary project.”

The North Avenue Smart Corridor involves multiple Smart City technology components designed to: facilitate and promote safety for pedestrian and bicycle traffic, use the latest technology adaptive traffic signals for a safer, more efficient flow of bus and vehicular traffic in real time conditions and prioritize fire engines and ambulances traveling along the corridor on emergency response calls. The North Avenue Smart Corridor, funded by the Renew Atlanta Infrastructure Bond, is now the most connected corridor in the State of Georgia.

“We couldn’t be more excited to launch the TravelSafely app today with Mayor Reed and our partners at GDOT,” said Faye DiMassimo, General Manager of Renew Atlanta. “Two years ago, Renew Atlanta began the transformation of our City’s infrastructure. Since that time, Renew Atlanta has put over $169M of infrastructure investment under contract in the community with over 480 projects underway, including the State’s first Smart Corridor. I want to thank Mayor Reed for the opportunity to be a part of this team and deliver quality and value to our residents, businesses and visitors.”

Earlier this year, the City of Atlanta launched the North Avenue Smart Corridor Demonstration Project in a ceremony held at Ponce City Market. Multiple companies based in Atlanta and the metropolitan area demonstrated their technology on the Corridor. Applied Information, based in metropolitan Atlanta, is providing all of the connected-vehicle infrastructure for the Smart Corridor, as well as the TravelSafely App.
