Mayor Kasim Reed Statement on the Passing of John Portman
ATLANTA – “Atlanta has lost a great man. Few individuals have shaped the City of Atlanta through his vision as much as John Portman. His signature is written in the Atlanta skyline.
Mr. Portman believed in cities and their power to create beauty and connection. His love for our city – and for Downtown Atlanta – is well known and unrivaled.
In addition to his extraordinary abilities as an architect and artist, Mr. Portman showed his love of his home through his philanthropy. His legacy also lives on in his support for the Atlanta BeltLine and the Center for Civil and Human Rights.
His memory will live on not only in our hearts, but in our built environment. We offer our sincere condolences to John’s family and friends, and pray for God's comfort to all who loved him. I believe I speak for many when I say Atlanta will never have another son like John Portman.”
