Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms Statement on Atlanta’s Selection for the Amazon HQ2 Shortlist

ATLANTA – “I am very pleased that Atlanta has been named as one of 20 cities selected for Amazon’s HQ2 shortlist. I want to thank the many partners whose leadership made this possible: Governor Nathan Deal, Commissioner Pat Wilson, my predecessor Mayor Kasim Reed, Metro Chamber CEO Hala Moddelmog, and Invest Atlanta CEO Dr. Eloisa Klementich. This truly has been a collaborative effort and I believe our success is a direct result of our teamwork and willingness to focus on results.

The City worked closely with the State to develop a competitive bid that represents our strengths. Atlanta is the economic center of the ninth-largest metropolitan area in the country. We have leading universities which are producing some of the country and world’s leading young scientists, engineers and entrepreneurs.

Our workforce is highly educated and nimble, and already contributing to the success of our region’s financial technology, cyber security and tech sector companies. Our startup ecosystem is growing and thriving, supporting young tech entrepreneurs who are launching new apps and tech companies every day.

Thanks to visionary leadership of past Mayors, we have one of the largest transit systems in the country – MARTA. We are at the beginning of an historic expansion of MARTA, thanks to the overwhelming support of the sales tax referendum which will generate $2.6 billion over 40 years. We are excited for the potential regional collaboration to further expand our transit system, offering more connections to employment centers.

Atlanta is home to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, the world’s busiest and most efficient passenger airport. Our airport offers unsurpassed and unrivaled connectivity to both our nation’s and the world’s leading cities. We are also the hub of major interstate highways and railroad networks.

Atlanta is known for our high quality of life at a relatively low cost. We are the city of trees, and we are a city of incredible culture, filled with artists, musicians and creators of all kinds.

Atlanta’s spot on this list is a testament to our city’s assets, including the strong working relationship between the City and the State. I am excited to move forward into this next phase of the process, and I look forward to continuing to work with Governor Deal, Commissioner Wilson, and all of our stakeholders to make sure Atlanta puts forth the strongest, most competitive bid possible.”
