Department of Corrections Celebrates National Correctional Officers, Nurses and Employees Week

2018 Corrections Officer of the Year named during luncheon on Friday, May 11

ATLANTA – The Department of Corrections (DOC) is celebrating National Correctional Officers, Nurses and Employees Week, May 5 – May 11, 2018.  Each year, the first full week in May is recognized as National Correctional Officers, Nurses and Employees Week. During this week, people pay tribute to the contributions of correctional officers, nurses and other civilian personnel who work in jails, prisons and community corrections across the country.

“Each May we participate in this national observance to honor our profession and recognize excellence among our staff,” said Chief Patrick Labat. “The Atlanta City Detention Center operates 24-hours-a-day, year-round, making it difficult to fellowship outside the facility.  Corrections week offers a well-deserved opportunity for staff and their families to be celebrated for their dedication and service to the City of Atlanta.”

This week-long observance will culminate with the 2018 Correctional Officer Awards, on May 11 where Chief Labat will name the Officer of the Year. New City of Atlanta Chief Operating Officer, Richard Cox will serve as the guest speaker.

The DOC kicked off its celebration with a four-mile run/walk led by Chief Labat, the Department of Corrections’ Command Staff, and the VIPER Team at the Atlanta BeltLine East Trail.  Other events planned for the week include professional development training sessions for staff, worship service at Jackson Memorial Baptist Church, a memorial tribute in honor of fallen officers, a retirees’ luncheon, health & wellness fair for City employees, kickball tournament, cookout celebrating seniors and more.
