City of Atlanta Begins Pre-Treatment of Priority Routes in Preparation of Winter Weather

ATLANTA - The City of Atlanta announced that due to the potential for winter weather and black ice on Tuesday, the Department of Public Works (DPW) activated to a Level 3 response and began pretreating Priority 1 and 2 Routes and Bridges with a brine solution at 7 a.m. Sunday. Level 3 response occurs when temperatures fall between 25-32 degrees and light precipitation is expected. Crews will continue pretreating routes through Monday evening. DPW will transition to a salt treatment overnight Monday, which will continue until the end of the weather event.

There is the potential of accumulating snow of up to 2” with localized higher totals possible in far North Georgia and higher elevations.

The City of Atlanta encourages residents and area businesses to shovel and salt their sidewalks, outdoor steps and walkways. This will keep outdoor areas accessible and will also help avoid injuries.

The treatment of bridges and overpasses is a priority because bridges typically freeze faster than roads due to higher elevations.

Public Works is equipped with seven brine units, 10 spreaders, 15 ATVs, 24,000 gallons of brine and 3,400 tons of salt. Contractor support is also on standby.

To report a non-emergency service issue, contact ATL311 by dialing 404-546-0311, or visit www.atl311.com.
