Update on Summerhill Publix

ATLANTA—Assessments and inspections of the Summerhill Publix have been completed by the City’s structural engineer and building inspectors. The Summerhill Publix, located at 572 Hank Aaron Drive, has been approved for reopening. Publix has addressed safety concerns and secured access to the parking garage until final repairs are completed. In addition, robust security measures will be implemented to protect the public while allowing access to food and pharmacy services in the community.

• The vehicular access point off Hank Aaron Drive will remain closed until permitted, completed, and inspected by the City.
• Publix will provide a security guard on Fraser Street entrance twenty-four hours/ seven days a week.
• Vehicular entrance off Glenn Street and pedestrian entrance off Hank Aaron will reopen to allow proper ingress and egress.
• No additional demolition, remediation, or construction will occur without prior approval from the City of Atlanta.

While there is no exact timeline for the removal of the crane truck from the parking deck or reconstruction of the parking deck, the immediate life safety issues have been resolved.

Background on incident:

On the morning of Saturday September 4, 2023, the Atlanta Fire Rescue Department was dispatched to the Publix Supermarket at 572 Hank Aaron in the Summerhill neighborhood regarding a parking deck collapse. Once on scene, they determined a crane truck fell through the concrete parking deck.

Signage was posted in the area listing the weight limit for the parking deck. One injury was reported—that of a crane operator—and the only hazard of note was diesel fuel runoff. Units on scene developed a plan to divert diesel fuel from the sewage system and water was temporarily shut-off to address the incident.

While this occurred on private property involving a private business, the City--including Councilmember Jason Winston--is engaged and monitoring the situation, and will ensure all safety measures are in place.
