City of Atlanta Prepares for Winter Storm Response

ATLANTA (January 8, 2025) – The City of Atlanta is actively preparing for an anticipated winter weather and is taking measures to ensure the safety and well-being of its residents. To prioritize public safety, all City of Atlanta government offices, including Municipal Courts, will be closed with employees working virtually on Friday, January 10, 2025.  

The City of Atlanta remains committed to ensuring the safety and preparedness of its residents during this winter storm. Stay tuned for updates via the City of Atlanta’s website and social media channels. Warming Centers

To support residents affected by homelessness, Warming Centers are open:

· Wednesday, January 8 at 8:00 p.m. - Thursday, January 9 at 8:00 a.m.
· Thursday, January 9 at 8:00 p.m. - Sunday, January 12 at 8:00 a.m.

Central Park Recreation Center at 400 Merritts Ave. NE, Atlanta 30308 for men only.
Selena S. Butler Park at 98 WM Holmes Borders Dr SE, Atlanta, GA 30312 for women and children only.
Transportation will be provided by Fulton County from the Gateway Center at 8:00 pm nightly with return transportation upon deactivation.

Old Adamsville Recreation Center and Emergency Shelter will continue to serve as an overflow location.

 

Department of Transportation (ATLDOT)

ATLDOT will begin pre-treating roadways with begin brine on Thursday, January 9, 2025, from 1:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. These efforts aim to mitigate hazardous driving conditions. In the event of winter weather, motorists are strongly encouraged to avoid driving.

The department has mobilized extensive resources for winter weather response, including:

  • 9 Brine Trucks
  • 2 Brine Stations
  • 12 Spreaders
  • 40 Seasonal Brine & Spreader Rentals
  • 5,500 Tons of Salt
  • 20,000 Gallons of Brine (with additional production capacity)
  • 200 Employees (100+ per 12-hour shift)
  • Contractor Support

Department of Watershed Management 

Adverse weather may affect the City's water mains, which may break more frequently during colder months due to underground conditions. The Department of Watershed Management reminds all residents to take steps to protect your home and address water issues during freezing temperatures:

  • Wrap exposed outdoor water pipes to prevent freezing and potential breaks.
  • Let faucets drip slowly during extreme cold to avoid frozen pipes.
  • Drain in-ground sprinkler systems and cover aboveground pipes.
  • Protect tender plants from the cold by covering them.
  • Locate your home’s water shut-off valve in case of emergency.
  • If you observe water running from streets or sidewalks, notify ATL 311 immediately at 404-546-0311.

 

Department of Public Works 

Residents should expect delays in garbage and recycling collection on Friday. Bulk pickups originally scheduled for this Friday will be rescheduled to Friday, January 17, 2025.

 

Safety Reminders for Residents

Residents are urged to take proactive measures to stay safe, including:

  • Filling vehicles with gas.
  • Stocking up on food, water, and essential supplies.
  • Avoiding travel during snow or freezing rain.

Residents experiencing power outages can report them by calling 1-888-891-0938 or visiting Georgia Power's Storm Center for updates and safety tips. Personalized notifications about outages are also available via phone, text, or email.
