A Successful and Safe Weekend in Atlanta: MLK & CFP Events Showcase City’s Excellence in Coordination and Preparedness
ATLANTA—After coming off a successful snow preparedness operation and management the weekend prior, the city of Atlanta proudly hosted more than 100,000 visitors for both the Reverand Doctor Martin Luther King Jr. celebrations and the College Football Playoff (CFP) events with no significant increase in 911 or 311 calls, demonstrating our ability to execute large-scale events with safety, efficiency, and collaboration.
Through meticulous planning, proactive communication and dedicated teamwork, City of Atlanta agencies and community partners delivered an exceptional experience for our residents, visitors and businesses.
This weekend’s success is a testament to the power of collaboration. Real-time situational updates and emergency response coordination ensured smooth operations resulting in a safe, organized, and memorable weekend for all.
Public Safety: A Top Priority
From the MLK Day commemorations to CFP fan events, our emergency preparedness teams worked around the clock in the City of Atlanta Joint Operations Center to ensure a safe and secure environment. Atlanta Police Department, Atlanta Fire and Rescue and emergency management teams from Homeland Security, Georgia State Patrol, Georgia Bureau of Investigation, Federal Bureau of Investigation, Fulton County Sheriffs and numerous Federal and State agencies coordinated efforts across multiple venues, managing crowds, traffic flow and rapid response capabilities. There were no major incidents, reflecting our proactive planning and real-time coordination with event organizers and public safety officials. This included 77,660 attendees to Monday’s College Football Playoff Championship at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. APD and AFRD still were able to manage incidents in all zones across the city.
Transportation & Operations
With increased traffic and airport arrivals, MARTA executed shuttle operations, with over 12,000 riders to bring fans to Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport screened 408,000 passengers, accommodated 13 additional flights for CFP fans and hosted a projected 1.5 million passengers while preparing for a winter storm event without major disruptions—all due to coordinated staffing and logistical planning.
Supporting Our Most Vulnerable
With cold temperatures affecting our city our teams ensured warming shelters remained operational and accessible, providing safe havens for those in need. Outreach teams worked tirelessly to connect individuals with critical resources, reinforcing our city's commitment to compassion and care.
Keeping Our City Beautiful
The Department of Public Works (DPW) executed a comprehensive cleanup strategy, ensuring that event spaces, parade routes, and public areas were maintained before, during, and after the festivities. Their efforts ensured our city remained welcoming, clean, and ready for visitors and residents.
Thank You to Our Teams & Partners
We extend our deepest gratitude to all our partners who made this weekend’s success possible. Your dedication and professionalism reflect the very best of our city.
With this weekend as a benchmark for success in event coordination, we are ready to continue hosting major events that will showcase Atlanta with confidence, safety, and efficiency. Atlanta continues to be chosen to host major events through a strong partnership with Atlanta Convention and Visitors Bureau, Atlanta Sports Council, Metro Atlanta Chamber, AMB Sports and Entertainment, State Farm Arena and City of Atlanta personnel and so many more. Atlanta will continue to execute on this level of precision and hospitality to meet the moment.
