Statement on Passing of Executive Protection Unit Officer Gonsalves-Barreiro

ATLANTA—Mayor Andre Dickens issued the following statement on the passing of Atlanta Police Department Executive Protection Unit Officer Gonsalves-Barreiro.

“I am heartbroken by the passing of one of our own from the Atlanta Police Department Executive Protection Unit, Officer Gonsalves-Barreiro. He served this city with distinction for more than two decades—first in Zone 2 after joining APD in 2004, and later as a trusted member of my Executive Protection team.

Even in the face of a courageous battle with serious health issues, he remained a happy warrior—steadfast, positive and deeply committed to public service and the people around him. His strength of spirit never wavered, and his presence made those who served alongside him better.

My thoughts and prayers are with his wife, Shakera Williams, their two sons and his entire family. We also mourn with his colleagues in APD, who have lost not just a dedicated officer, but a brother.

We will honor his service, remember his sacrifice and carry forward the example he set—of professionalism, resilience and quiet courage.”
