City of Atlanta Department of Planning and Community Development Provides Funds to Columbia Residential for the Affordable Housing Development
Creating quality, new and affordable housing are key factors in revitalizing Atlanta communities. Today, the City of Atlanta’s Department of Planning and Community Development joins Columbia Residential for a groundbreaking ceremony launching the reconstruction of a multi-family housing complex for citizens. The Department’s Office of Housing awarded $1.3 million to Columbia Residential to help fund the demolition of the 15-building abandoned housing complex that will be reconstructed as Columbia at South River Gardens.
The housing redevelopment project will create 124, two-story rental units for Atlanta’s low-income senior citizens. “This new multi-family project will enhance the quality of life for Atlanta citizens by providing them with quality housing options in a convenient in-town location,” said James E. Shelby, Commissioner of Department of Planning and Community Development. The demolition and reconstruction of Columbia at South River Gardens will start this spring and is expected to be completed in June 2011.
Columbia Residential has partnered with Walton Construction Services and Pacciano and English Architects to design and build the new senior rental facility. “We have learned from experience how to build communities that exceed the needs of our residents. Columbia at South River Gardens has been designed with the highest quality standards and amenities that we believe residents will appreciate and value,” commented Jim Grauley, President, Columbia Residential.
Officials agree that the addition of quality housing will help contribute to an overall improvement in housing options for Atlanta citizens. Developers also expect the project to attract new retail and service-oriented development to further compliment efforts to stabilize other corridors within the Southwest Atlanta area. “As additional investment occurs, the overall revitalization of the neighborhood will lead to rising property values, stable housing and a new sense of community,” stated Noel Khalil, chairman and CEO, Columbia Residential.
The Columbia at South River Gardens multi-family development groundbreaking ceremony will take place Tuesday, May 18 at 5 p.m. at the reconstruction site (3450 Forrest Park Road, Atlanta, GA 30354). For more information or to RSVP, call 404-419-1440.
