The City of Atlanta will open its community pools for residents and visitors Memorial Day weekend, traditionally the start of the swimming pool season. Beginning on Monday, May 31, 2010, 10 City of Atlanta swimming pools and three community-operated pools will be open for the summer.
Mayor Kasim Reed, City Councilmember Cleta Winslow and the Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs will host a “Summer Splash” celebration to officially kick- off the outdoor pool season at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 1, 2010. The community is invited to come to Rosa Burney Park Pool for the festivities, hosted by WSB- TV News Anchor Jovita Moore. Mayor Reed and Councilmember Winslow also are expected to attend the event. During the celebration, the installation of an artistic fence will take place.
“Creating places where young people enjoy safe and fun recreational activities in their communities is a top priority of my Administration,” said Mayor Reed. “The re-opening of almost all of the City’s swimming pools this summer is a step in the right direction. These pools will have a significant positive impact on the quality of life for all residents in the City, especially children and young adults.”
Mayor Reed has asked the Atlanta City Council for $3.7 million in his FY2011 budget proposal to re-open all the City’s recreational centers by the end of the calendar year. Last year, many of the City’s pools and recreation centers were closed due to budget constraints and renovations.
“We are very excited about this year’s pool season,” said Charlene Braud, Director of the Office of Recreation. “We will have several pools located in every quadrant of the City open for residents to stay fit, keep cool, and have fun. We’ve hired and trained pool staff to manage the pools and make sure safety is a priority.”
The operating hours and days for the pools will vary. Daily rates are $4 adults and $2 for children and senior citizens. Children under 5 years of age are free.
