Atlanta Police Chief Recognized For Leadership Efforts

Chief George N. Turner nominated for 2014 Leadership Character Award

Atlanta Police Chief George N. Turner was nominated for a 2014 Leadership Character Award by the Robert K. Greenleaf Center for Servant Leadership and Atlanta-based Turknett Leadership Group. Chief Turner was nominated in the large company category and the award recognizes Georgia leaders who demonstrate outstanding character in leadership.

Chief Turner is a 33-year veteran of the Atlanta Police Department. Under his leadership, major crimes including homicide, rape and robbery are down 18 percent. During his career at the Atlanta Police Department, Chief Turner rose through the ranks, holding 18 different positions and significantly contributing to the Department’s expansion.

Since his appointment to Chief of Police, Chief Turner has focused on community engagement, boosting the number of officers on the street and making Atlanta a safer city. In the past four years, Chief Turner has created eight new units, including the Community Oriented Policing Section, to respond to citizen concerns. He has also worked with Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed in growing the department to the largest force in history, with more than 2,000 officers. Chief Turner is committed to deterring crime and has led the Atlanta Police Department in becoming one of the first law enforcement agencies to use innovative technology to stop crime before it occurs.

Chief Turner serves on numerous boards and committees including the Georgia International Law Enforcement Exchange and a High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area board. He was recently named the 1st Vice President of the Georgia Association of Chiefs of Police and becomes the second African-American to hold this position. Leadership Character Award nominees are selected by an advisory board. Winners will be announced on September 24 at the Sheraton-Atlanta Hotel.
