The Department of Public Works is responsible for overseeing transportation infrastructure, collection and disposal management of solid waste, and managing the vehicle fleet for the City of Atlanta. During inclement weather, our services may be compromised when temperatures are consistently below freezing. Some weather related impacts that may contribute to service delivery include equipment failures, and accessibility issues due to icy roads. However, we are committed to continuity of service as conditions allow. In preparation for the anticipated snow/ice storm expected to hit the Atlanta area this week, we will implement the following:
- Right of Way Maintenance crews will spread a mixture of sand and salt over all bridges and overpasses and segments of street with steep grades prior to the snow event during the day on Thursday, 01-07-10.
- The crews will canvass designated areas and respond to dispatched calls received from Police or other notifications during the snow event, as necessary.
- Consistent with our normal emergency operating procedures we will follow our "Emergency Plan for Snow and Ice Control" procedure, which establishes priority response requirements, equipment needs, material stock pile locations and key personnel contact information. All field personnel have been properly equipped with winter gear for safety purposes.
Should the City be significantly impacted by the expected weather conditions, operations will be reflective of a “holiday” schedule which means that all solid waste pickups (household garbage, recycling, and yard trimmings) may be delayed by one day. Customers should continue to place their waste items out on the regularly scheduled pick up day. Work efforts on closed or blocked streets will be handled once streets are re-opened to vehicular traffic.
Please call (404) 853-3227 to report icy road conditions, downed trees/debris.
