 News Release

APD Summer 2015 Crime Reduction Initiative

The Atlanta Police Department will enhance patrols, have a greater visibility and encourage citizen awareness throughout the summer of 2015. Officers, investigators and supervisors will work to ensure communications are being streamlined and information is being shared in order to fight crime as effectively as possible.

The Atlanta Police Department has selected 32 targeted areas within the City of Atlanta, whereby APD personnel will focus efforts throughout the summer months. These areas have been identified through historical crime data and fall within each geographical zone within the City of Atlanta. Areas of focus will be on the business district, residential areas and apartment communities within the city.

Moreover, the Atlanta Police Department has dedicated 14 specialized units and secured six federal partners (US Attorney, FBI, ATF, IRS, U.S. Marshalls and HIDTA) and two State partners (GBI and State Probations) to aid in our efforts to reduce crime throughout the summer months. It is our goal to continue crime fighting efforts through consistent and persistent interaction with all of our external partners and resources.

In addition to a robust deployment of internal resources and fully engaging external partners to fight crime; the Atlanta Police Department will continue to focus efforts on engaging the community. In the coming months, APD in partnership with the Atlanta Police Foundation (APF), will implement a juvenile initiative pilot program within the Vine City and English Avenue Community to provide outreach services to children and families living in the area.

There will also be several other community engagement efforts including, but not limited to, the Community Oriented Policing Section’s (COPS) partnership with the Municipal Court’s Restorative Justice Board aimed at training, jobs and GED assistance as well as the Atlanta Police Athletic League co-hosting an annual summer camp with the School Detectives Section.

As always, the Atlanta Police Department will utilize intelligence and technology to augment its enforcement efforts in the city. Specifically, PredPol (predicative policing software) will aid the department’s efforts to allocate appropriate resources to specific areas throughout the city. This along with other forms of technology, such as patrol officer’s use of tag readers and intelligence analysts’ evaluation of data and link analysis, will be implemented to aid crime reduction efforts.

Lastly, we will depend heavily on prosecutorial support throughout the summer months. The U.S. Attorney, Fulton County District Attorney’s Office and the City of Atlanta Solicitor’s Office will provide advice to ensure optimal prosecution of cases.

“Our Department looks forward to ensuring that the City of Atlanta is a safe place for citizens to live, work and play. We will continue to allocate resources, form collaborative partnerships aimed at reducing crime, and vigorously pursue those who stand in the way of a safe city for all,” said Chief George Turner.

Our mission is to create a safer Atlanta by reducing crime, ensuring the safety of our citizens and building trust in partnership with our communities.
