Mayor Kasim Reed Statement on the Adoption of the Historic Agreement at COP21 Climate Meetings in Paris

ATLANTA – I want to thank and congratulate President Barack Obama and Secretary of State John Kerry, along with their fellow world leaders, for adopting a deal that represents historic and meaningful progress to combat climate change. The agreement will unlock innovation and investment to reduce emissions and help our communities adapt to climate change.

Today, cities generate 70 percent of the world’s GDP, produce 70 percent of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions and house more than 50 percent of the world’s population. The agreement's ultimate success will depend on local leadership.

Last week I joined more than 500 mayors and municipal representatives from 115 countries at Paris City Hall to make the case for how cities can and will lead on implementing local climate change solutions.

The City of Atlanta leads the nation in square footage of commercial building space committed to energy efficiency through the Better Buildings Challenge. We passed the first benchmarking and auditing ordinance in the country to include both energy and water efficiency measures for commercial and municipal buildings. In addition, we will soon deploy electric vehicles in the City’s fleet and install solar panels on 30 municipal facilities.

It is by leading on climate action that Atlanta and other cities will build a healthier, more prosperous, and more competitive America.
